Dr. Deepak Chopra is known worldwide for his views and books on physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social wellness. In addition to being a global leader and pioneer in the field of mind-body medicine and co-founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing, he is also an Advisory Board Member of the Akshaya Patra Foundation USA.
Time magazine included Dr. Chopra as one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the last century, crediting him as “the poet-prophet of alternative medicine.” He has served as a presenter and keynote speaker at an impressive array of events involving countless global leaders throughout his long and distinguished career.
Chairing this fall’s An Intimate Evening with Deepak Chopra are Philamena and Arthur Baird, Anuradha and Mani Subramanian, Nidhika and Pershant Mehta and Leena and Ash Shah on behalf of the Houston chapter of The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to efficiently feeding millions of underprivileged children of India every day. The event is an opportunity to support the pioneering efforts of Akshaya Patra in helping not only India, but with the potential for the program to be replicated globally.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation debuted over ten years ago to address India’s most pressing challenges of hunger and education. Today, Akshaya Patra serves over 200 million meals each year to schoolchildren from its 21 highly efficient kitchens. At the cost of only 13 cents per meal, every dollar raised by Akshaya Patra provides meals for 8 children. Sadly, millions of children of India work every day, in lieu of attending school, simply to be able to feed themselves each day. By providing these daily meals to the children at no cost to them, the Akshaya Patra Foundation helps further the youth education, providing for them a crucial incentive to stay in school rather than quitting to work just to earn enough to eat.
